Buying Physical Silver and Gold

July 30, 2009 | Author: Fred | Filed under: Gold & Silver

In the last post I talked about the potential risk of buying SLV and GLD ETFs. But if you don’t buy EFTs, how do you go about buying the real thing? For a long time I heard Kiyosaki and the Rich Dad advisors recommend buying silver and gold, especially silver and I wondered how do you actually do it?

My biggest question was where do you buy it? How do you know you are getting the real thing and a fair price? Well I’m definitely no expert now but it’s much simpler than I thought. You just need to find a reputable dealer. That can be just about any dealer in your area that sells a lot. You can also ask around on forums on the Web and see what people suggest. It’s normal to ship the metal so you don’t have to necessarily buy it in your own town.

There are different types, mainly bullion (round bars) and coins. With coins you have to be more careful because some could be more expensive as collector items. If you want to just get the metal then go with bars. To be sure you get a good price just compare a few different reputable dealers, but most should be reasonable. The easiest way is to order online and have it shipped to you.
